SELF-CONFIDENCE BOOSTERS
2018
Brass

Self-confidence Boosters explores the relationship between physical gesture and emotional state.
Each piece is designed to encourage — or gently compel — the wearer into a gesture associated with confidence and positivity: lifting the chin, opening the chest, facing forward, speaking up or smiling.
Made in brass, the objects act as physical prompts, temporarily altering the wearer’s posture, expression or behaviour. Rather than representing confidence symbolically, Self-confidence Boosters asks whether an object worn on the body can actively influence the way we feel.

The collection began during yoga sessions with a friend who worked as an instructor. Shinzato encountered a gesture in which the chin is lifted and the gaze directed upwards, accompanied by the idea that the simple act of looking up could encourage a more positive state of mind.
She became interested in the possibility that something as small as changing the position of the body could affect how a person feels. This led her to consider other gestures and actions associated with confidence, and whether jewellery could be used to initiate them.
